Opening, editing, sharing, managing searches

Searches can be opened, saved or managed / edited by using the search mask or the menu in the results’ title list.

Saving searches local, global or as a file

Searches can be saved locally (only in Invention Navigator 7.0, not in Invention Navigator Portable), globally or as a file.

Locally saved searches are saved in the local INav database and are only available when the database is open.

Globally saved searches are saved on the SIP servers and are always available, regardless which local database is open. Globally saved databases can also be used and created by the Invention Navigator Portable. Globally saved researches can also be shared with colleagues. More about that later.

If you save your search as a file an .isf – file will be saved at a location selected by you. To open or edit the file, pull it into the research surface of the Invention Navigator using Drag-and-Drop.

Saving Searches

To save a search, click “Save as” in the search mask. A new window will open. Select where you want the search to be saved by using the tab “location”. Then enter the name of the search in the white field (above the “Delete” button) and complete the task by clicking “Save”. In this window you can also edit or delete searches.

If you accidentally saved your search in the wrong location, simply open the search and save it again locally, globally or as a file.

Sharing, forwarding searches

Would you like to make searches available to other users or share the searches with them? In order to do this use the “Publish” feature in the “Save search as” window or save the search as a file and send this file to the other users. The recipients pull the file into the search mask and see the search mask with the search string in the same manner you created it. The search can then be edited in the known fashion. (See video)

Making searches available to other users using “Publish”

You can use searches together more elegantly by sharing them using the “Publish” feature.

Save the search globally and then click on “Publish”. In the new window enter the user name (in the field “Click here …”) of the user you would like to share a search with. If the user name is correct it will be displayed in the list. In the field “Permissions” you can enter “write” or “read”. If you award the right “read” the user can open and perform the search but not edit it. With the right “write” the user can edit the search at anytime.

Editing saved searches

An always reoccurring question, especially with new users of the INav versions is how to edit saved searches.

As soon as you open a saved search the search fields are displayed “closed”. In order to display the search in more detail and to optionally edit it you have to click on the Plus symbol to “open” the search fields. Now you can edit them.

If brackets/containers were used in the saved search a pencil icon is displayed. Once you click on this icon (it will then transform in a disk icon) the bracket will open and you can now edit the search fields in the bracket.

Converting Version 5.0 searches

Please note that searches created with INav 5.0 can not be opened with INav 7.0 (or 6.0). Please contact us if you would like to use these searches with the Invention Navigator 7.0. We will then convert the researches in the new format.
