The Result List

When submitting a search or when opening segments, lists, etc. the hits will be displayed in the result list. The result list can be customised in the menu tab View. Here you can select if an image, a title, the abstract, applicant, inventor, etc. are displayed. When performing a keyword research you can also select the view keyword in context. When doing this, passages in the text will be displayed which contain the search terms. This view takes longer to load and only the next 50 patents can be displayed.

Recent Result List

On the start page you are able to access the most recently created or opened result list. Here you will see the most recent list you viewed before logging out.

The Title List

After submitting a search (standard search) 50 hits will be displayed. The results displayed depend on the type of search carried out. In the case of a text search the results will be displayed sorted by their relevance. Here the SIP-Ranking comes into effect. Patents, in which the search terms occur most frequently in certain fields are displayed at the top of the list. If search terms are found in the title, the abstract or in the claims the hit will receive a higher ranking than a hit containing the search terms in the description. When searching for classes, dates, other bibliographic data, when combining or opening searches or lists the results are displayed according to the DOCDB data entry order. The sorting is alphabetical (can differ in exceptional cases). Display is either patent or family based. In the Invention Navigator Portable Basis Versions the view is always family based. In the other versions this can be adjusted. This can be done via the menu tab View. Check the box “one family member” to sum up all hits for specifically found patents in a search belonging to one family. Patent families can be identified in the list by the colour change of the arrow next to the patent number from white to blue. By clicking on the arrow all patents summarised in the list will be displayed. Click on it to view other patents in the family.

Set To Top

You can determine which family member will be displayed in your list. In order to do this, click Set to top in the menu tab Tools. A new window will open. In the left hand column select the countries for which you would like to set a hierarchy. By clicking the arrow icon between the two columns you can move them to the right list. Now sort the order of the offices. If, for example, DE is located on the top of the list followed by EP and WO the German patent document will be displayed in the result list if a German family member was found and is contained in the combination of families. If this is not the case, the EP-Patent is displayed and if this is also not there the WO-Patent is displayed. If neither DE-, EP- nor WO-Patent were found any family member will be displayed.

If a hit is found during a search, for example in the abstract of an EPA patent the most recent document of the SIP patent will always be displayed even if it does not deliver any hits. In this example the granted patent B1. Exceptions are JP, KR publications. The reason for this is that English translations for granted documents are available very late or not at all and we would like to provide you with texts in an easily understandable language.

Sorting the Title List

The order in which results are displayed is dependent on the type of search.

More sorting criteria are planned.

By clicking on the column header you can sort the title list. Thereby only the displayed list and not all hits will be sorted.

Additional Fields

If other authorised users created their own fields in the Invention Navigator Professional (e.g. application numbers), published them in the network and set the rights accordingly you can view these fields in the title list. You can show or hide them by using the menu item View.
