Knowledge Network Features

The Invention Navigator Knowledge Network

Users who co-operate with other people within a company or another task group, use the Invention Navigator Knowledge Network to create a mutual working structure. As a user, the Knowledge Network can be accessed by selecting the menu item folder and click the item Folder Selection/Administration or in Folder Assign to Folder. You can alternatively access this feature by clicking directly on the yellow folder icon in the menu tab. The folder icon without arrow opens the tree to select/open folders and to administrate the filing structure. The folder icon with the blue arrow opens the tree for which you have rights to file the results of your searches, alerts and from other folders.

When selecting the respective folder tree in the menu or by clicking the folder icons in the menu tab, the Knowledge Network will open in a separate window. This window can be moved on the screen as desired.

The Knowledge Network administrator assigns the rights which folders can be seen by the users.

In addition to the mutually used folders and, if applicable, folders visible to other users, you can access a folder “My folders” in which you can create sub-folders and have full rights.

Special features of the Invention Navigator Portable Standard without Knowledge Network

Invention Navigator Portable users who do not belong to a Knowledge Network can also open the windows “Folder Selection/ Administration" and "Assign to folder". These users will see a folder “My folder” in which they can also administrate folder structures. The user possesses full rights to create their own tree structure and to add or remove patent families/SIP-patents. It is not possible however, to make this folder available to other users for viewing or editing. “Active folders” are not available.

The SIP-patent based folder

With the Invention Navigator Portable version 2.2.24 a new type of folder was introduced. Usually all folders in the Knowledge Network are family-based folders. One exception is the SIP-patent-based folder, labelled with an S.

If results from detail view, the title list or from a monitoring profile are filed in a family-based folder, the entire family is filed in the folder regardless which SIP-patent of the patent family was displayed in detail view or in the title list. When assigning a result from the title list to an SIP-patent-based folder the exact SIP-patent displayed in the title list will be assigned. When assigning a result from detail view to an SIP-Patent-based folder the exact SIP-patent displayed in detail view will be assigned. You can select a different SIP-Patent of the patent family by selecting it in the patent family and display it in detail view. In the family-based folder, the number behind the folder name displays the amount of patent families contained in the folder. In SIP-patent-based folders you can see the amount of SIP-patents. In an SIP-patent-based folder multiple SIP-patents of a patent family can be displayed. A representative of the family, i.e. an SIP-patent will always be displayed in the result list or in detail view.

If you click on a hit in the result list or if you open this hit in detail view the folders containing this hit will be highlighted blue. A family-based folder can contain any SIP-patent of the family, whilst an SIP-patent-based folder needs to contain the selected SIP-patent in order to be highlighted blue.

Searching in folders

You can display the contents of folders visible in the administration tree (icon without the blue arrow) in the title list by clicking on this folder. You can also carry out a search by dragging the folder into the search mask using drag and drop or by selecting the field “Folder” in the search mask and select the respective folder. If you check the box behind the search field “Folder” you will carry out a search in all accessible folders. If a user does not have the right to perform searches in the global SIP patent database this box is automatically checked.
