Detail View

The title list can give you a first impression about the contents of a patent or a family. However, this information is usually not sufficient to be able to judge the relevance of a hit. The detail view provides you with additional and clearly presented information and images. To get to the detail view, click on the patent number in the title list. After doing so, the detail view will open in a new window.

To get to the next hit in the list you do not have to navigate back to the title list. You can scroll through the hits by using the buttons located on the lower right side of the images.

The right side of the detail view - images

The detail view is divided into three parts. On the left side you find the bibliographic data, on the top right an image (if available this will be the title image) and beneath it the mosaic view with further images of the patent. By double clicking on the image, an enlarged version of it will be opened in a new window which you could, for example pull onto a second screen. You can select other images by clicking on the mosaic images. These will then be displayed in the upper window. You can enlarge or reduce the mosaic images by clicking the “Plus” button. You can copy, save or rotate the images.

The left side of the detail view – bibliographic data and text

In the left section the bibliographic data is displayed. Apart from the patent number the simplified legal status of the patent is shown. This is generated from the legal status data and the publication’s document type within an SIP-Patent. A patent will remain granted as long as a lapse code is published in the INPADOC database. Only then the legal status will be set to dead. The legal status will always refer to the patent and not to the entire family.

A patent will also be set to “dead” if it is more than 25 years old. (Reason: the possibility of extension of the term in the pharmaceutical, chemical sectors)

Local Database:

If you are working with a local database (Invention Navigator Professional) you can set if the simplified legal status for a patent older than 20 years (application date) or utility model older than 10 years is displayed as lapsed/dead.

Below the patent number the application date is displayed. With new grants of German or European patents the date of opposition is also displayed. You can view additional IPC classes, names of applicants and inventors by clicking the arrow in the corresponding fields.

Below the title you can view the entire INPADOC patent family. Click on the Plus icon to show them. The display of the patent family will remain open when you scroll to the next patent in the list. In order to display a family member simply click on the patent number of the respective member. Next to the patent number you can find the publication date and, if available, own fields (only in the Invention Navigator Knowledge solutions) for the respective family members.

Abstract, Claims and Descriptions

After the bibliographic data, claims and descriptions are displayed for offices for which full texts exist. If there is no text data for specific offices the text data of other family members will be displayed. If this is the case it will be shown in brackets which family member the text originates from.

An additional text field which is only to be found in the Invention-Navigator-Network solutions is the field corporate abstract. Here summaries and texts are displayed which were created by authorised persons within the network and contain, for example, a description of the invention. The contents of this field are visible for every family member and is equivalent with the network comment known from previous versions. You can find out more in the chapter Company specific fields and Workflow.

Additional Functions, Buttons and Workflow

On the top left, next to the images you can find a drop down menu for the language, for example for switching between German, English or French claims in European patents.

Here you can also find the icon which will open the window for creating, editing and managing highlighting schemes. The pencil icon will open the window for creating the company abstract and for assigning and viewing comments and status levels on document level. Please refer to chapter Company specific fields, comments and Workflow to find out more about this topic. This icon is only available in Knowledge-Network-Solutions.

Available for all users is the email icon and the PDF icon. With the email icon you can simply send the link to the document. Your email client will open (e.g. Outlook, Thunderbird) and generate an email containing the link to the respective patent on our website. The recipient of your email does not have to be registered with SIP to see the page and to access further information.

The PDF-Icon will turn green if a PDF full text is available. If the icon stays red, no PDF full text is available.

Users of the Invention-Navigator-Professional-Version will additionally see a button with a Paragraph sign. This button opens the SIP legal status display. Find out more about this feature in Family and Legal Status Monitoring.

The features read, not relevant, assign to segments will also be outlined in the chapter Workflow.
